About the Digital Nomad Visa

The digital nomad visa is a residence authorisation issued by national governments to individuals who work remotely for employers or clients based outside the host country. It is a distinct immigration category from the tourist visa — which prohibits commercial activity — and from the conventional work permit, which presupposes sponsorship by a domestic employer. The digital nomad visa permits the holder to reside in the host country while all productive employment is directed toward foreign-based entities.

Applications across jurisdictions share a common set of required proofs: demonstrated monthly income from remote work sources, typically evidenced by bank statements, foreign employer contracts, or freelance client documentation; health insurance valid within the host country; and, in most programs, criminal record clearance. Some jurisdictions also require proof of accommodation. Family members may apply as dependants under programs that offer such a pathway.

Initial grants are typically issued for one year. Most programs offer renewal subject to continued satisfaction of income and insurance conditions, with some jurisdictions providing a pathway from digital nomad status to standard long-term residency after a qualifying period. The category has been adopted by governments across Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Southeast Asia, with the first cohort of purpose-built programs enacted in 2020.
