About the ETIAS
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a pre-travel authorisation required of nationals who are currently visa-exempt when visiting the Schengen Area. It is a distinct instrument from the Schengen Visa, which applies to nationals who require a visa to enter; ETIAS applies exclusively to those who currently travel without a visa.
Applications are submitted online. The system checks applicant information against EU security and immigration databases before issuing a decision. A granted ETIAS authorisation is linked digitally to the applicant's travel document and is valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever is sooner. Multiple entries are permitted during the validity period, subject to the 90/180-day short-stay rule applicable across the Schengen Area.
ETIAS was established by EU Regulation 2018/1240 and is administered by the ETIAS Central Unit, operating within Frontex, alongside eu-LISA. The system is designed to operate in conjunction with the Entry/Exit System (EES), which records physical border crossings of third-country nationals at Schengen external borders.
