About the OCI / Overseas Citizen of India

The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) is a registration status issued by the Government of India to persons of Indian origin and their spouses. It is not citizenship — OCI holders are not Indian nationals and do not hold Indian passports — but it confers a package of rights equivalent to those of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) for most economic, financial, and educational activities within India.

OCI status entitles the holder to a lifelong, multiple-entry visa to India with no requirement to report to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for stays of any duration. OCI holders may purchase non-agricultural and non-plantation property in India, open bank accounts, and access domestic fee structures at educational institutions on par with NRI rules.

OCI status does not confer the right to vote in Indian elections, to hold certain public offices, or to acquire agricultural or plantation land. The status was introduced under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2005, and the former Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) card was merged into the OCI framework in 2015, consolidating both statuses into a single instrument administered by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
