Greece exempts UK passport holders from EES biometric registration

The Embassy of Greece in London confirmed UK passport holders are excluded from biometric registration at Greek border crossing points from April 10, 2026.

The Embassy of Greece in London confirmed on its website that British passport holders are excluded from biometric registration under the European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES) at Greek border crossing points, effective from the system's full rollout date of April 10, 2026. Border staff continue to manually stamp UK passports rather than capture fingerprints and facial images.

What's changed

The Embassy of Greece in London posted a statement on its consular website confirming that within the framework of EES implementation as of April 10, 2026, British passport holders are excluded from biometric registration at Greek border crossing points. Under the standard EES procedure, third-country nationals — including UK passport holders post-Brexit — would have their fingerprints and a facial image captured at first entry to the Schengen Area, with subsequent crossings verified against the digital record. The Embassy's statement signals that Greek border authorities are continuing to manually stamp British passports — a process the Greek government estimates takes approximately 15 seconds per traveller, compared with several minutes for biometric enrolment.

The exemption falls under EU Regulation 2017/2226 Article 60 flexibility provisions, which permit Schengen states to ease Entry/Exit System enforcement during the post-April 9 transitional rollout. Italy and Portugal have introduced similar easings; France, Belgium, and Italy have called for a full system suspension through summer 2026. The European Commission has reported an average EES processing time of approximately 70 seconds per traveller across participating states since the system went fully operational on April 10, 2026.

Who's affected

UK passport holders travelling to Greece for tourism, business, family visits, or other short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the visa-exempt arrangement that applies to British nationals after Brexit. The exemption applies at Greek border crossing points only — UK travellers entering the Schengen Area through other member states, such as France, Spain, or the Netherlands, are subject to that state's EES enforcement framework, which may include full biometric registration.

The Embassy of Greece in London noted in correspondence with travel publications that the exemption was implemented to protect tourism flows during peak travel periods. The Greek National Tourism Organisation has reported the United Kingdom as a leading source market for Greek tourism, with several million UK visitors per year. UK travellers transiting through Greek airports to onward Schengen destinations remain subject to EES procedures at the destination state.

When it takes effect

The exemption took effect from April 10, 2026 — the date EES became fully operational across 29 Schengen-participating European countries. The Embassy's statement does not specify an end date. As of May 4, 2026, the exemption remains in force at Greek border crossing points. Future EU Commission guidance, or a Greek government decision to align with full EES enforcement, would terminate the exemption; as of this article's publication, no such decision has been announced.
